Same Rina Oil, Opposite Price Moves: Naivas Cuts While Jaza Increases

The same grocery brand can be moving in completely different directions depending on where you shop.

ShelfSight's latest Price Watch has picked up an interesting example involving Rina Vegetable Oil.

At Naivas, tracked Rina listings became cheaper.

At Jaza, a Rina 5-litre listing moved the other way.

What changed?

ShelfSight recorded:

  • Naivas — Rina Vegetable Oil 5L: -KES 101
  • Naivas — Rina Vegetable Oil 1L: -KES 11
  • Jaza — Rina Vegetable Oil 5L: +KES 70

The most striking comparison is the 5-litre pack.

While Naivas reduced its tracked Rina Vegetable Oil 5L listing by KES 101, Jaza increased its tracked 5L listing by KES 70.

That creates a KES 171 difference in the direction of price movement between the two retailers.

Same brand. Different retailer. Different direction.

This is one of the clearest examples of why saying a product is simply "getting more expensive" or "getting cheaper" can be misleading.

At one retailer, Rina is becoming cheaper.

At another, it is becoming more expensive.

For the shopper, the question therefore becomes:

> Where should I buy it today?

That answer can change even when the brand and pack size stay the same.

Why can this happen?

Retailers do not necessarily change their prices at the same time.

Differences can come from:

  • promotions,
  • different stock purchase dates,
  • supplier agreements,
  • retailer margins,
  • clearance pricing,
  • inventory levels,
  • or individual pricing strategies.

ShelfSight can see the price movement, but the data alone does not tell us which of these factors caused it.

What it does tell us is that retailer choice matters.

The 5L pack tells the story

Large cooking-oil packs are significant purchases for many households.

A difference of tens or hundreds of shillings on a 5-litre pack can have a noticeable impact on the final grocery bill.

That makes large-pack staples particularly useful products to compare before shopping.

In this case, one retailer moved down by KES 101 while another moved up by KES 70.

Those are not small movements.

Naivas also reduced the 1L pack

The movement was not limited to the larger pack.

ShelfSight also detected:

Naivas — Rina Vegetable Oil 1L: -KES 11

That means two tracked Rina listings at Naivas moved downward during the latest check.

It strengthens the signal that Naivas is currently pricing at least part of the Rina range more aggressively.

Does this mean Naivas is always cheaper?

No.

This snapshot only tells us what happened to these particular tracked listings.

Prices can change again.

Jaza may later reduce its price.

Naivas may end a promotion.

Another retailer could become cheaper than both.

That is precisely why historical tracking matters.

A supermarket that was cheapest last month may not be cheapest today.

Price movement is as important as price

Most shoppers only see the number currently printed on the shelf.

ShelfSight adds another layer:

What was the price before?

That allows us to see when:

  • one supermarket cuts a price,
  • another raises it,
  • a promotion begins,
  • a discount disappears,
  • or retailers begin moving in the same direction.

The current Rina example shows why that context matters.

The ShelfSight takeaway

Rina Vegetable Oil is currently showing very different price behaviour across retailers.

At Naivas:

  • 5L: -KES 101
  • 1L: -KES 11

At Jaza:

  • 5L: +KES 70

Same brand.

Same broad product.

Opposite price direction.

For shoppers, the lesson is simple:

> Don't assume the price movement at one supermarket is happening everywhere else.

Compare before you buy.

Monitor. Compare. Decide.
